1872 – Would you believe it? It all started in New York

It all started when William Lawrence invented the first cream cheese in New York to bring a fresher, richer taste experience to the cheese market.

1880 – Why the name Philadelphia?

He decided to name his wonderful cheesy creation after the city of Philadelphia. At that time that was the centre of premium quality food.

1903 – Spreading further

The Phenix Cheese Company caught wind of the emerging popularity of Philadelphia cream cheese and bought the trademark from Lawrence.

1920s

1920s – Goodbye corsets, hello cream cheese!

As the ‘20s were roaring, Philadelphia got a makeover as well. Oscar J. Links patented a new aluminium foil packaging and extended the cream cheese’s shelf life.

1930s – Going on a roll

After Kraft merged with Phenix in 1928, Philadelphia was on the up and up. It was on a roll when the first automated packaging machine was introduced in 1935.

1960s – Now in a supermarket near you

Philadelphia makes it across the pond over to Europe as the only dairy product that guarantees the same creamy freshness for 21 days.

1980s – A tub of goodness

As the number of cream cheese fans increases, so do their appetites. Philadelphia introduces new flavours, and varieties to satisfy every palate. Now in a handy tub with a lid.

2009 – Rounder shape to get every last bit

The iconic oval shaped tub is introduced and becomes an instant classic for Philadelphia. No more missing out on cream cheese stuck in the corners.

Now even our vegan friends can enjoy the comforting and delicious taste of Philadelphia, with the new Plant Based option. Made from almonds and oats, with the same creamy feel.
